Early Bookmobile locations

Many of Columbus Metropolitan Library’s most recent branch locations were first served by bookmobiles, including Canal Winchester, Dublin, New Albany, Hilliard and the southeast side.

Bookmobile service began in November 1950 to reach parts of the county without a branch or county station library. In its first year, over 75,000 books were borrowed from the bookmobile. By 1958, there were four bookmobiles that together made up one-quarter of all library circulation that year. In 1995, two bookmobiles were redesigned to become “Metro Mouse Mobiles” and visited area preschools to promote early literacy skills. The last two large bookmobiles were retired in 2014. One small bookmobile is still in use for library sponsored and community events.

Home delivery service began in 1972, and Lobby Stop service to senior residential sites began in 1995. Many of the original sites are still on the roster. Delivery of classroom collections to 23 area schools began in 2014 and became part of Outreach Services in 2016.
