The Whitehall Branch was recognized by the American Institute of Architects/American Library Association (AIA/ALA) with a Library Building Award in 2017.

The expanded library was officially dedicated on April 30, 1991 in a ceremony that included First Lady Barbara Bush, Ohio Governor George Voinovich and Columbus Mayor Dana Rinehart.
Although construction was delayed a year due to restrictions on purchasing steel as a result of the Korean War, the library service building opened in back of the Carnegie Library in 1953. A second addition was built between 1961 and 1964.
